Top 10 Bearbricks for New Homeowners

If you are a new home owner, or are looking to spruce up your house in a home improvement project during this Covid period, or simply hunting for a housewarming gift for your friends and family, a Bearbrick is a great option to make any home instantly “Pinterest-worthy”. It adds a pop of colour and character, instantly livens up the environment and becomes a conversation starter for visitors to your abode.

To save you the hassle of looking for a worthy piece in the sea of Bearbricks, we have shortlisted top 10 Bearbricks we deem fitting for new home owners (in no particular sequence)!

 1. Maneki-neko (Fortune Cat)

The maneki-neko (招き猫 aka fortune cat / beckoning cat) is a common Japanese figurine which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. While the Beckoning Cat originates in Japan, it has also become a popular good luck figure in Chinese businesses and homes.

Instead of the traditional fortune cats, why not introduce a twist and get a manekineko Bearbrick? There are many types and colours available, each symbolizing different meanings and serves different purposes as follows:

  • Black Cat: Safety, wards off evil and stalkers
  • Golden Cat: Wealth and prosperity
  • Red Cat: Protection from evil & illness (especially illness in children) Example
  • Pink Cat (a more modern color): Love, relationships and romance. Example
  • Green Cat (also a modern color): Educations/studies
  • Right Paw raised: Invites money and good fortune Example
  • Left Paw raised: Invites customers or people
  • Both Paws raised: Invites protection of home or business
  • Coin: Wealth and material abundance
  • Bib and Bell: May relate to protection, as well as wealth and material abundance (showing respect and veneration for the cat, caring for the cat and keeping it warm, displaying wealth, gold bell as symbol of treasure -either material or non-material)

2. Marvel

We all love Disney’s Marvel Universe superheroes and villians. If action figures are not your thing, consider Marvel Bearbricks instead. There are several pieces available in 400+100%, 1000% including Iron Man, Iron Spider, Spider Man, Venom, Captain America, Deadpool.

3. Sesame Street

A tribute to our childhood, Sesame Street is a longtime favourite of children and adults. Fan favourites Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Oscar and Grover are all available, with even releases of the characters in furry-like fabric in recent months.

4. Basquiat

If you are into streetwear and art, Jean-Michel Basquiat should be no stranger in your dictionary. His work has been crafted into a unique design for the Bearbrick series. Basquiat is most known for using social commentary in his paintings to identify with his experiences in the Black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. In his earlier works, Basquiat was known for using a crown motif, which was his way of celebrating Black people as majestic royalty or deeming them saints.

The Basquiat Bearbrick series consists of Basquiat #8, Basquiat #7, Basquiat x Andy Warhol, Basquiat #4 and more.

 5. Keith Haring

Keith Haring enjoyed a close friendship with Basquiat. Both commented on police brutality and racism and questioned the commercialisation of the art world long before their works became highly sought-after. They inspired popular culture and created a visual language through the use of signs, symbols and words to convey their deepest thoughts.

6. Daruma

Daruma dolls are used and cherished as a symbol of good luck and future fortune, commonly placed on a shelf at home or in a business. Before putting them on display, however, the owner must make a wish that they hope will come true, or something they aim to work towards in their own life, before colouring in one eye, marking the wish. It doesn’t actually matter which eye is filled in first, but conventionally, the daruma’s left eye is the more popular choice. Once the wish has come to fruition, the other eye is coloured in and the daruma is complete.

7. DC Characters

Superheroes from the DC Universe need no further introduction. Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Joker, Harley Queen, you name it you have it!

 8. Mickey Mouse

An age old classic popular with both adults and children! Medicom has produced many renditions of the famous mouse in a Bearbrick series, from classic pieces such as Black & White and R&W 2020, to limited collaboration pieces with fragmentdesign, Hajime Sorayama, A Bathing Ape and READYMADE.

 9. Van Gogh

One of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art, Van Gogh's works are distinguished by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork.

A few of Van Gogh's highly recognisable artworks have been immortalised into Bearbricks, mainly Sunflower, Self Portrait, Courtesan (after Eisen) and The Starry Night.

10. Star Wars

Star Wars fans will not be able to resist the entire Star Wars Bearbrick series. The latest addition to the family is “The Mandalorian” warrior, which has grown really popular.
